Thyroid gland diseases are very widely spread among the population. There are various symptoms of sickness and complaints that are associated with thyroid gland diseases. Sometimes this is only one accidentally discovered nodule, which requires clarification and therapy.

There is another group of diseases, which is connected with symptoms typical of the thyroid gland: agitation, nervousness, fatigue and physical symptoms, for example, a rapid heartbeat, an inclination to sweating, change in body weight or loss of hair.

Diagnostics
The diagnostics of thyroid gland diseases comprises internal examination, a high-resolution sonography (ultrasound diagnostics with colour duplex), thyroid gland scintigraphy as nuclear medical procedure, applied in case of existing indications and labour values. Finally, some thyroid gland diseases require histological examination by means of puncture cytology.

Internal and surgical therapy
Often, a hyper or hypofunction of the thyroid gland is balanced with the help of special drugs. In another case, an increase of a thyroid gland with swallowing difficulties or an unclear thyroid gland nodule can be reason for an operative therapy. The extent of the operation is planned according to the individual situation. The procedure, the course and postoperative treatment is thoroughly clarified during conversion. In order to make the surgery as secure as possible also in regard to vocal cords, an intraoperative neuromonitoring of the nerves has come into existence. This procedure is used in our department on a regular basis.

Each disease has a functional level, which indicates a disease process. The medicine must alongside the question: “What makes us fall ill?” also answer another question: “What makes us recover?” Drugs of anthroposophical medicine that are obtained from natural products as predominantly potentiated drugs are focused on this therapeutic goal.

Thyroid glands diseases show a special relation to people’s soul. These are not only diverse mental disturbances, but also some biographical crises and stress. For this reason, a comprehensive therapy of people with thyroid gland diseases often comprise more then just a drug therapy. Different therapy procedures and conversation therapy of antroposophical medicine can be applied here.

To start a healing process it may be necessary to have a look at the biography with regard to existing stress or critical life events. This glance at the life story should contribute to finding a new meaning for events and experiences and to realise internal steps needed to achieve a lasting internal piece.
