A very warm welcome to the Havelhöhe Obstetrical Unit!
We are pleased with how the Havelhöhe Community Hospital’s Obstetrical Unit has developed since its opening in 1998. In this time we have been able to see a great interest in a treatment that is both holistically and individually focussed. The expectant family stands at the centre of our considerations. Respect for the uniqueness of their situation guides our actions and the type of technical assistance applied, the extent of which is complemented by anthroposophical medicine.

Pregnancy with confidence
Every woman experiences pregnancy differently. During pregnancy consultation sessions, midwives endeavor to provide women with a comfortable environment for problems related to the pregnancy to be worked on – either during the pregnancy or after childbirth. Treatment takes place on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Prenatal meetings and courses should help to support and strengthen your self confidence. We are happy to offer preliminary discussions on a private basis with a doctor and midwife, during which time we can assist you with your individual expectations and questions.

Information evenings
The Obstetrics Unit holds information evenings for parents on the first and third Wednesday of every month between 19:00 - 20.30. The dates can be found here. Registration is not required.

Giving birth in safety and security
We aim to ensure you can cherish the uniqueness of the birthing process. A general rhythm between mother and child will occur during labour that we will seek to support. We do this by offering rooms and an atmosphere in which the decisions required during the birth can be taken together. We place great emphasis on interior design that provides a sheltering atmosphere. Our rooms provide peace and tranquility, with operating devices running in the background. This also takes into account the child's needs, as it should be born into a world similar to the one it has previously known. It is received by its parents in a subdued, low lit atmosphere, which is replicated in the maternity wards.

Labour pain can be treated by a variety of supportive measures, remedies and medicines. The choice depends entirely on symptoms and the state of progression. If the final stages of pregnancy results in a breech presentation, then an external version, normal birth, or a caesarean section are to be discussed as methods of delivery.
In an operating room adjacent to the delivery rooms, parents can receive their child with dignity even after a cesarean section. There are also nurses and a pediatrician on hand for the care of your child. The pediatrician will also perform second examination (U2). In the rare case that a second treatment for the newborn is required, it will be carried out in close cooperation with the Red Cross Children's Hospital at Spandauer Damm.

Postnatal care
After the intensive birth experience, we seek to give the new family a safe haven. We see it as our task to support the mother and child on the way to their new independence. This support is available in our Mother-Child Unit, where the various requirements determine the length of stay. If desired, it is also possible for fathers to stay (space permitting). Fathers and the newborn’s siblings are always welcome, but we ask relatives and friends to please respect the visiting hours.

Breastfeeding the natural way
For a peaceful initiation into the breastfeeding process, you and your child need time and tranquility to become familiar with one another in the first days. A harmonious commencement to family life sets the path for a healthy future. It is especially important for us to support you in this.
After birth, your child stays in direct skin contact with you. This gives the child familiarity, security and warmth and assists in its arrival into its new world. In most cases, the child will then soon be taking to the breast. Only after this will the necessary routine measures such as measuring and weighing take place.
Your child is always with you in the Mother-Child Unit. In this way, you will quickly learn to recognise the needs and signs of your child, and can breastfeed it at any time for as long and as often as you wish. Breastfeeding as it is needed is an important prerequisite for successful breastfeeding. Naturally, those mothers who do not breastfeed receive individual advice and assistance.

By the way – we are certified:
Since 2005, the Havelhöhe Community Hospital has been recognised by WHO and UNICEF as a "Baby Friendly Hospital". This demonstrates that the breastfeeding recommendations of the World Health Organization and UNICEF are implemented in practice.

Safety for mother and child
To ensure mothers and their newborns are provided with the best possible security, we have established a risk management system in obstetrics in collaboration with the Society for Risk Consultancy (GRB), which is reviewed at regular intervals.
